The federal government, reeling below intense farmer protest,s notably in Punjab and Haryana, has introduced enhanced procurement targets for rice and cotton in the course of the present kharif advertising and marketing season and acknowledged that it has spent over ₹1.90 lakh crore in 2019-20 for procuring rice and wheat on MSP.
Asserting cotton procurement targets for the season, for the primary time, Textile Secretary Ravi Capoor stated the state-owned Cotton Company of India (CCI) would procure 125 lakh bales (one bale is 170 kg) of cotton, which is 20 lakh bales greater than the 105 lakh bales procured within the earlier season.
Capoor, who briefed the media together with Agriculture Secretary Sanjay Agarwal, Meals and Public Distribution Secretary Sudhanshu Panday and Meals Company of India (FCI) CMD, DV Prasad, assured the farmers that the CCI could be keen to obtain any quantity of high quality cotton that farmers carry.
